 BSDH SPRING CONFERENCE 2018

26th/27th April 2018 – Poole, Dorset

Applications are invited from BSDH members for the prizes below:

1.      BSDH CLINICAL PRIZE   Value of award: £300

Entry criteria: this competition is open to BSDH members and seeks entries from non-consultant grade (or equivalent) clinicians. Clinical cases should demonstrate treatment provided for an adult patient with needs for Special Care Dentistry and should satisfy one or more of the following criteria:

·         Involve dental treatment provision for a patient with a significant disability or medical history

·         Involve a practical solution to a clinical problem

·         Involve a multidisciplinary input to treatment planning and provision of care

·         Resulted in improved clinical practice or service for other patients

It is expected that presenters will have personally performed some of the treatment, not just undertaken a diagnostic work up, for the patient they present.

2.  CLINICAL AUDIT PRIZE   Value of award: £300

Entry criteria: this competition is open to BSDH members and seeks entries from non-consultant grade (or equivalent) clinicians. Projects submitted under this category must demonstrate:

·         The key aspects of the audit or service evaluation process

·         What changes / improvements have been made to clinical practice or service delivery

3.  BSDH POSTER PRIZE Value of award: £200

Entry criteria: this competition is open to BSDH members and seeks entries from non-consultant grade (or equivalent) clinicians. The abstract should describe an aspect of the practice of special care dentistry.

The best entrants will be invited to present posters at BSDH Conference, 26th/27th April 2018

[Poster preparation: Posters will be displayed on a standard display board and should be A0 portrait (841 mm width by 1189 mm height)]. 

 

4. BSDH TRAVEL AWARDS Value of award: £500 (2 awards available per year)

Entry criteria: The British Society of Disability and Oral Health has established these awards to support BSDH members (excluding consultants and equivalent academic grades) who wish to present a poster or oral communication at scientific meetings of the International Association for Disability & Oral Health (IADH) or the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) . Up to two awards of £500 will be available per annum.

      CLOSING DATE FOR RECEIPT OF ABSTRACTS:  4 March 2018

The winning entry(s) will receive their certificate and cheque as part of the conference proceedings at the BSDH Spring Conference 2018, 26th/27th April 2018, or it can be sent in the post if the person is unable to attend. The winning entry(s) will present at the BSDH Winter Conference 2018, 26th/27th April 2018. If a winning abstract is not accepted for the proposed conference, or the applicant is subsequently unable to attend the named meeting, BSDH must be informed and the award may have to be returned to the Society.

 

5. BSDH Undergraduate Essay Prize Value of award: £300

Entry criteria: this competition is open to undergraduate dentists, therapists and hygienist. The essay should satisfy one or more of the following criteria:

·         Involve subject related to provision of dental care for people with severe disability or medical history and demonstrate good team working

·         An audit, service improvement or research of relevance to special care dentistry

·         Resulted in improved clinical practice or service for special care patients

They should be original, clearly written. The winning essay will be considered for publication in the Journal for Disability and Oral Health.

6. BSDH Dental Care Professional Essay Prize Value of award: £300

Entry criteria: this competition is open to undergraduate Dental Care Professionals BSDH members from anywhere in the world. The essay should satisfy one or more of the following criteria:

·         Involve subject related to provision of dental care for people with severe disability or medical history and demonstrate good team working

·         An audit, service improvement or research of relevance to special care dentistry

·         Resulted in improved clinical practice or service for special care patients

They should be original, clearly written. The winning essay will be considered for publication in the Journal for Disability and Oral Health.

Abstract preparation and submission

BSDH members may only submit one abstract on which they are the presenting (first) author but it is permissible to be a co-author on multiple abstracts. It is expected that, in keeping with normal publication protocol, the first author (the presenting author) has made the greatest contribution to the work described. All co-authors must have approved the abstract submission. Furthermore, no abstract should have been presented previously at a National or International scientific meeting or have been published.  The presenter must register for the Scientific Meeting.  Failure to do so, after acceptance of an abstract, may result in the abstract being withdrawn.

 

Preparation of abstracts

Abstracts should be prepared according to the protocol given below. There are three main formats for abstracts described. In the case of the travel award, applicants should select the most appropriate abstract format for their work. Failure to adhere to the detailed format for abstract preparation will result in the rejection of the abstract.

 

 General instructions for all abstracts

 

1.       Complete abstract form

2.       Use 12 point Arial font

3.       Title should be no more than 12 words

4.       The presenting author should be listed first and co-authors thereafter.

5.       Give surnames followed by up to two initials

6.       Give affiliations for each author on line below names

7.       The main body of the abstract text should not be more than 250 words

8.       Provide the name of any funding body, if applicable, at the bottom of the abstract

Specific instructions for an essay

Essays should contain a short abstract no longer than 250 words which is able to stand alone and follows the general instructions and any relevant specific instructions above. The abstracts word count will not contribute to the essay’s word limit. The essays should be structured in the same format as for the relevant abstract. Research submissions should be structured as follows:

·         Introduction

·         Materials and Methods

·         Results

·         Discussion

·         Conclusions

All submitted essay will be considered for publication in the Journal for Disability and Oral Health (JODH) and as such must meet the criteria set by JDOH.
